Raiders win Class CC Championship in extra innings, 2 to 1

Eli Beard Tournament MVP

The Class CC Tournament finals pitted the #2 seeded Caledonia-Mumford Red Raiders against the #8 seeded Warsaw Tigers at Batavia’s Dwyer Stadium. The Raiders were making their 2nd consecutive trip to the finals, having lost a heartbreaker to Oakfield-Alabama in the 2009 finals, while the Tigers were on a season ending roll which saw them beat the #1 and #4 seeded teams to advance to this year’s final.

Pitching performances for both teams were exceptional. Tournament MVP Eli Beard from Cal-Mum opened the contest, striking out 8 of the first 9 players he faced, finishing his 7 innings with 13 K’s. Tigers’ Dakota Stackhouse was nearly as impressive, striking out 5 of the first 6 Raiders he faced. Stackhouse would finish his 7-inning stint with 10 strikeouts.

Following the early game strikeout fest, the Raiders finally broke through in the bottom of the 4th inning. Eli Beard open the bottom half of the 4th inning by working Stackhouse to a full count before picking up a base on balls. Sean Ancker would then move Beard over to 2nd base with a single. Stackhouse looked to have worked himself out of the jamb by striking out the next two Raiders. Jon Cappotelli would deliver a clutch single to left field, scoring Beard while Ancker would be caught at home plate with a tag, for the final out of the inning.

The Tigers would answer the Raider score in the top half of the 6th inning. Warsaw’s Nicolozzo picked up a one-out base on balls. Borowski would make Beard pay for the walk as his long drive to center field, plated Nicolozzi with the tying run.

Both pitchers battled to a draw the rest of the way through the regulation 7-inning game. Coach Walker elected to finish the game with Cody Hammond, sending him to the mound in the top half of the 8th inning as the game went into extra innings. Hammond would do his job as he kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the final two innings.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Sean Ancker’s hustle play, beat out a infield hit, on a close play. Ryan Callan came in to run for Ancker. Mike Anderson would move Callan over to 2nd base as he worked the Tiger pitcher for a walk. Ben Anastasi would redeem himself, big time, for striking out in his three previous at bats. Ben would deliver a 2-strike, 1-ball pitch, deep into the gap between the left and centerfielders, scoring Callan from 2nd base and ending the contest.

Immediately following the contest, the players on each team were recognized. Eli Beard was awarded the Tournament MVP Award and Coach Walker was honored as Section V Class CC Coach of the Year. The Raider have little time to enjoy the victory as they are scheduled to play Cuba-Rushford at Wayland-Cohocton the following day at 1:00 p.m.
